Osteopathy

A hands-on, whole-body approach to pain and movement.

Osteopathy is a form of manual healthcare focused on the musculoskeletal system, including your joints, muscles and how you move. At Bond Osteopathy in Glen Iris, every consultation takes a whole-body view to understand what is driving your symptoms, rather than only treating the sore spot. It is a conservative, hands-on approach that combines assessment, treatment and advice.

How it works

Osteopathy is thought to work in a few ways at once. Hands-on techniques may help reduce muscle guarding, improve how a joint or region moves, and settle the sensitivity of an irritated area, which can make movement more comfortable in the short term. Just as important is what happens between sessions: graded movement, load management and targeted exercise are thought to build the capacity that keeps a problem settled. We treat hands-on care as a way to open a window, and the active side as what makes the change last. No approach is a guaranteed fix, and we are honest about realistic timeframes.

What it can help with

Osteopathy is commonly used for a range of mechanical, musculoskeletal presentations, including:

This is not an exhaustive list, and suitability is worked out after your assessment.

What to expect

Your first visit is a full initial consultation of around 60 minutes. It starts with a thorough case history: what happened, what makes it better or worse, your work, training, sleep and your goals. Then a physical assessment looks at how your spine, joints and muscles move, along with your posture and control, and, where relevant, neurological checks such as strength, reflexes and sensation. From there you get a plain-English explanation of what we find and a management plan you agree on together. Where appropriate, treatment on the day may include soft-tissue techniques, articulation, muscle energy technique, joint techniques, dry needling, cupping and exercise rehabilitation. Techniques are chosen and explained with you, and nothing is done without your consent.

Is it right for you?

Osteopathy suits most mechanical pain, the kind that changes with movement and position. It is best thought of as one part of a broader plan rather than a standalone answer, and it may not suit everyone. Part of every assessment is screening for the small number of presentations that need a different pathway, such as referral to your GP or for imaging, and we will tell you honestly if osteopathy is not the right fit and help you find the care that is.

Safety and things to know

Osteopathy is generally low risk. The most common effect is short-term soreness or tiredness after treatment, which usually settles within a day or two. Techniques are always chosen and explained with you, and you can decline any technique at any time without needing a reason. Screening for anything that needs onward referral is a routine part of care, not an afterthought. If a technique is not suitable for you, we simply use another approach.

Common questions

Does it hurt? Most treatment is comfortable, though some techniques can feel firm and a little soreness afterward is normal. Tell us if anything is too much and we will adjust.

Is it safe? Yes, osteopathy is generally low risk when delivered by a registered practitioner. We screen for anything that needs other care as part of your assessment.

How many sessions will I need? It depends on your presentation and goals, which we discuss after assessment. The aim is a clear plan with a sensible endpoint, not open-ended visits.

Is it covered by health funds? Osteopathy is claimable through most private health funds with extras cover, and through some WorkCover, TAC and DVA arrangements. See the FAQ for details.
