Back & Neck Pain

Back and neck pain is the most common reason people come to Bond Osteopathy in Glen Iris. It can build up slowly from desk work, training or daily load, or arrive suddenly after an awkward movement or lift. The good news: most back and neck pain is not caused by serious damage, and it usually responds well to a clear, active plan.

What we commonly see

What we assess

Your appointment starts with a thorough history: what happened, what makes it better or worse, your work, training and sleep, and your goals. Then a physical assessment looks at how your spine, joints and muscles move, your posture and control, and, where relevant, neurological checks (strength, reflexes and sensation) to understand what’s driving your symptoms and to screen for anything that needs onward referral.

How we decide whether osteopathy is right for you

Osteopathy suits most mechanical back and neck pain, the kind that changes with movement and position. Part of the assessment is checking for the small number of presentations that need a different pathway (see “When to seek other care” below). If osteopathy is a good fit, we’ll explain why and what the plan looks like. If it isn’t, we’ll tell you honestly and help you find the right care.

What the first appointment involves

  • A detailed history and a plain-English discussion of your problem
  • A physical assessment, explained as we go
  • A clear diagnosis and what’s likely driving it
  • Hands-on treatment where appropriate, plus advice and exercises
  • A plan you agree on together, with a sensible endpoint, not open-ended visits

Your first visit is a full initial consultation (around 60 minutes), longer than a standard 30-minute follow-up. Current fees and appointment lengths are shown when you book online.

Treatment options (and their limits)

Treatment is tailored to you and may include soft-tissue techniques, articulation and joint techniques, dry needling, cupping, and exercise rehabilitation. Hands-on care can help comfort and movement, but lasting results usually come from the active side: graded movement, strength and load management. No technique is a guaranteed fix, and we’re upfront about realistic timeframes. You’re always in control, and nothing is done without your consent.

When to seek other care

Most back and neck pain is not serious. See your GP or urgent care promptly, rather than booking osteopathy first, if you have: leg or arm weakness or numbness that’s spreading; problems controlling your bladder or bowel, or numbness around the groin or inner thighs; back pain with unexplained weight loss, fever or feeling generally unwell; a history of cancer; or significant pain after a major fall or accident. These are uncommon, but they need medical assessment.

Common questions

Do I need a referral? No. You can book directly. If you have a GP care plan or a WorkCover, TAC or DVA claim, see the FAQ for what to bring.

Will you manipulate my neck? Only if you’re comfortable with it. There are many ways to treat the neck, and we explain the options and gain your consent before any technique. You can say no at any time.

Do I need a scan? Usually not for ordinary back pain. See our article, do I need a scan for my back pain?

How many sessions will I need? It depends on your presentation and goals, and we discuss it after your assessment. The aim is a clear plan with an endpoint.
